Warna-warna
burung yang brilian telah mengilhami penyair dan pecinta alam, namun
para peneliti dari Universitas Yale dan Universitas Cambridge menyatakan
bahwa warna-warna tersebut hanya mewakili sebagian kecil dari apa yang
mampu dilihat oleh burung.
Temuan ini didasarkan pada studi sistem visual burung, dilaporkan dalam jurnalBehavioral Ecology edisi
23 Juni, menunjukkan bahwa selama jutaan tahun evolusi, warna bulu
berangkat dari warna yang suram hingga menjadi warna terang seiring
burung secara bertahap memperoleh kemampuan untuk membuat pigmen baru
dan struktural warna.
“Pakaian
kita warnanya cukup menjemukan sebelum adanya penemuan pewarna anilin,
tapi kemudian warna menjadi murah dan terjadi ledakan pakaian
warna-warni yang kita pakai saat ini,” kata Richard Prum, kepala dan
Profesor William Robertson Coe di Departemen Ornitologi, Ekologi
dan Biologi Evolusi, yang juga adalah penulis pendamping dalam makalah
studi. “Hal yang sama sepertinya telah terjadi pula pada burung.”
Selama
bertahun-tahun para ilmuwan telah berspekulasi bagaimana burung
memperoleh warna mereka, namun studi Yale/Cambridge merupakan yang
pertama yang mempertanyakan apakah keragaman warna burung sebenarnya
terlihat oleh burung itu sendiri. Ironisnya, jawabannya adalah bahwa
burung melihat warna yang lebih banyak dari manusia, dan burung pun
mampu melihat warna yang lebih banyak lagi dari apa yang mereka miliki
pada bulu mereka. Burung memiliki kerucut warna tambahan di retina
mereka yang sensitif terhadap kisaran ultraviolet sehingga mereka
melihat warna-warna yang tak terlihat oleh manusia.
Seiring
waktu, burung telah mengevolusikan kombinasi warna yang mempesona
termasuk berbagai pigmen melanin (pigmen yang memberi warna pada kulit
manusia), pigmen karotenoid (pigmen yang berasal dari pola makan
mereka), dan warna struktural, contohnya seperti mata biru pada manusia.
Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa warna struktural menghasilkan bagian
terbesar dari keanekaragaman warna pada bulu burung, meskipun relatif
jarang di kalangan burung.
Penulis
pendamping Maria Caswell Stoddard dari Cambridge, yang mulai meneliti
sistem visual burung saat sebagai sarjana di Yale, ingin tahu mengapa
burung belum mengembangkan kemampuan untuk memproduksi, misalnya, warna
kuning atau merah ultraviolet pada bulu mereka – warna-warna yang tak
terlihat oleh manusia tapi terlihat oleh burung sendiri.
“Kami tak tahu mengapa warna bulu terbatas pada subset ini,”
kata Stoddard. “Keluar dari warna gamut mungkin mustahil untuk dibuat
dengan mekanisme yang tersedia atau mungkin itu merugikan.”
“Itu tidak berarti bahwa palet warna pada burung akhirnya mungkin tidak berkembang pada perluasan ke warna baru,” kata Prum.
“Burung
hanya bisa membuat sekitar 26 hingga 30 persen dari warna yang mampu
mereka lihat namun mereka telah bekerja keras selama jutaan tahun untuk
mengatasi keterbatasan ini,” kata Prum. “Hal yang mengejutkan
untuk disadari adalah bahwa meskipun warna burung terlihat begitu sangat
